The intention behind the "Stand Art" event in Madrid in October
2003 was to fuse Interior design, fashion, and live music, underlining the
conceptual and formal similarities of these disciplines. Moneo Brock Studio
was invited to make one of four exhibitions planned for the three-day event.
Material, texture, modulation, transparency and color were the parameters
at work in our installation. The space was loosely structured to flow around
the different pieces, creating competing views, superposition of scales
and unexpected compositions.
Solid acrylic sheets and hollow acrylic panels in transparent, translucent
and brilliant colors were cut, folded and manipulated to create shelf units,
dividers, and chairs. The sketches of fashion designer Iñigo Aragon
--printed at life-size on acetate and suspended in two fields at opposite
corners of the space-- created the background and welcomed the visitor to
the space. Light projected through these elements painted walls and floor
surfaces with colors. The furniture and the designs blended in form, color
and texture.
Lounging fields were made with masses of coconut fiber mat, cascading to
form fold upon fold. Contrasting with the crisp and precise acrylic pieces,
the collection of furniture was expanded to include seats made of cork,
foam and coconut fiber, experiments with traditionally modest materials
that were developed as part of this site-specific project.
