A Tribute to the Arch

The installation “The Color of Stone” stems from a reflection on the ancestral relationship between stone and architecture, with a particular focus on one of the most iconic structural elements: the arch.
Historically associated with stone construction, the arch—especially the catenary arch—has long been a powerful structural solution, capable of spanning large distances with minimal resources. In this piece, Moneo Brock pays tribute to this geometry, reinterpreting it through a contemporary and symbolic lens.
The installation is composed of a sequence of catenary arches made of pink Porriño granite, each with different heights and proportions, inviting visitors to walk through, around, and within them. This formal diversity alludes to a plural, open, and interconnected society, where each arch may be read as a threshold, a doorway to new paths, or as a bridge connecting people, times, and ideas.
Conceived at a human scale, the piece seeks to balance the monumental and the everyday, encouraging physical interaction. Far from being a purely sculptural object, the installation incorporates integrated benches that invite pause, gathering, and encounter—much like the many plazas and urban spaces built in granite throughout Spain. In this way, “The Color of Stone” becomes a habitable urban landmark, the seed of a possible architecture.
The use of pink Porriño granite, with its warm tone and historical resilience, is key to the material expression of the work. Sourced and crafted locally, this stone is both a symbol of Galician identity and a compelling example of sustainability and durability.
The project was made possible thanks to the invitation of Stonegal and the impeccable production work of Godoy Maceira, whose technical collaboration was essential in realizing this piece with both precision and sensitivity.
