Our first collaboration, this loft has been our home since 1993. A 1,400 SF. penthouse, the raw space was dark, dirty, full of pipes, and with relatively low ceilings throughout. Its potential lay in its location on the top floor, and in its impressive open heavy-timber structure. This yellow pine and oak frame was wherever possible left freestanding for its strength and texture to be appreciated. Movement through the space weaves under beams and around columns and up towards the vertical spaces of the skylights.
A folding aluminum ship's ladder
gives access to the roof deck via a glass-floored landing. Light fixtures
were designed to fit within the construction to leave the ceiling clean.
A compact living services volume houses kitchen, pantry, two baths and
a bedroom. Here the spaces closely follow the needs of use. The rest
of the loft remains as free and open as possible. The use of oriented
strandboard as a finish surface marks the beginning of our exploration
in the use of materials for textural effect.
